For many years, people worldwide have been concerned about artificial intelligence (AI) and its eventual takeover of society. Who thought it would begin with the fields of literature and art?

Thanks to ChatGPT, a chatbot created using the company’s GPT-3 technology, OpenAI is back in everyone’s social media feeds after months of dominating the internet with its AI image generator Dall-E 2.

GPT-3 is the most well-known language-processing AI model on the internet, even though its name isn’t particularly memorable and might just as quickly refer to a random computer part or an ambiguous legal term.

Modern language processing AI model GPT-3 (Generative Pretrained Transformer 3) was created by OpenAI. The technology behind GPT-3 appears to be straightforward. It swiftly responds to your requests, inquiries, or prompts. The technology to execute this is far more complex than it appears, as you might expect.

Text databases from the internet were used to train the model. This contained a staggering 570GB of material that was collected from books, web texts, Wikipedia, articles, and other online literature. Even more precisely, the algorithm was fed 300 billion words.

It uses probability to predict what the following word in a phrase should be as a language model. The model underwent supervised testing to reach the point where it could perform this.

Here, inputs like “What color is the wood of a tree?” were supplied into the system. The team is planning on producing the proper result, but that does not guarantee that it will. When it makes a mistake, the team enters the right response back into the program to teach it the right response and aid in knowledge development.

It then goes through a second stage that is comparable, providing several options and having a team member score them in order of best to worst, training the model on comparisons.

Where ChatGPT thrives and fails

Likewise, there are numerous aspects where ChatGPT is effective. It understands ethics and morality surprisingly well for an AI.

ChatGPT can provide a considered response on what to do when presented with a list of ethical theories or circumstances, taking into account the law, other people’s thoughts and emotions, and the safety of all parties.

It also can keep track of the existing conversation, be able to remember rules you’ve set or information you’ve given it earlier in the conversation.

The system can recognize the prejudices, stereotypes, and general opinions of the internet because it was mostly trained using words from the internet. Accordingly, depending on who you ask, you might find occasional jokes or stereotypes about particular groups or political personalities.
